Srila Prabhupada blessed Hawaii with his presence on many occasions. My visa had expired in India and I heard Srila Prabhupada was in Hawaii so I went there. Upon arriving the temple president, Sukadeva Prabhu, asked me to work at the Govinda's restaurant. On my first day Srila Prabhupada came. He sat on the floor in the meditation room. He asked if we had samosa's and we didn't, so he just had orange juice.
Srila Prabhupada used to take his morning walks at a place called Magic Island. I got to tag along on a few of the walks. Srila Prabhupada walked briskly at times then sometimes stop and comment. One time he stopped and watched the surfers for a moment. He said that they had 'mystic powers'; they were walking on water. "I cannot do this" he remarked. The next day when he saw the surfers again he called them 'sea-sufferers'. He said that they were preparing to take their next lives as dolphins and sharks. One time Sukadeva caught a bug in Srila Prabhupada's room and he asked him what to do with it. Srila Prabhupada said, "Take it to the window; not this squishing business!" Sukadeva says, who else can you ask a question like this? Anyone else would think you were 'nuts', but Srila Prabhupada was always asked and answered these kinds of questions.
Another time the devotees asked Srila Prabhupada if they come fumigate the temple to get rid of the cockroaches. Srila Prabhupada said that the devotees were too lazy to clean properly so the bug problem comes. He didn't approve of it.
One time Srila Prabhupada walked through the prasadam room and noticed a grain of rice on the floor. He said that prasadam should not be dropped or left on the floor because it was an offense to Krishna who is the offering. Srila Prabhupada did not like to waste anything, especially prasadam. He personified the saying, 'utility is the principle'.
Srila Prabhupada was very fond of mangoes. One of the devotees asked him if he preferred a particular kind since there are about 40 varieties in Hawaii. Srila Prabhupada said he wanted the ones from the eastern side of the tree because they get the morning sun. The morning sun gives prana or life force. Srila Prabhupada regularly took his massage in the morning sun.
Another time Srila Prabhupada talked about the motorcycle riders with their black jackets who may be preparing to take their next lives as cockroaches and skid across the kitchen floor. Everyone laughed as Srila Prabhupada made the sound, "varoom varoom" as he pointed back and forth across the floor.
Wherever Srila Prabhupada went he would bring great joy to the devotees. They would get 'fired up' by seeing and hearing him. Devotees who may of left would return and new people would join up after being personally enlivened by Srila Prabhupada our ever well-wisher. Nowadays it's harder to get 'fired up' without the personal inspiration of Srila Prabhupada he always stressed that the message was the most important type of association. So let us share our memories of the pure devotee and get 'fired up' follow his instructions and go back home, back to Godhead; where it's even nicer than Hawaii!
